課程概述

本課程是印度佛教研究的綜合性導論。我們將回顧二十世紀初以來國際學界的突出成果，並仔細考察本領域的重要研究方法。課程分為三個部分，第一部分概述印度佛教的不同發展階段及相關的代表性專著；第二部分介紹印度佛教領域的不同材料與方法，包括目前最具影響力的學術模式；第三部分側重於印度佛教哲學研究中的文獻學、哲學史與比較哲學等方法，並展示知識論和唯識等佛教哲學研究中有示範意義的著作。
This course is a comprehensive introduction to the study of Indian Buddhism. We will review the outstanding achievements of the field and carefully consider significant research methods that have emerged in the international academy. The course is divided into three parts. Part One provides a survey of different stages of the development of Indian Buddhism and samples representative monographs that study them. The second part of the course introduces various sources and methods for the study of Indian Buddhism, with an attention to the academic models that are most influential presently. The third part of the course focuses on the methods in the study of Indian Buddhist philosophy, including philology, history of philosophy, and comparative philosophy. In this final segment of the course, reading materials will also feature exemplary work in different branches of Buddhist philosophy such as epistemology and Yog?c?ra.

2.全面熟悉印度佛教的歷史以及研究現狀
3.在學習不同研究方法論的基礎上，培養對於理論與方法的思考能力，由此而促進個人在未來研究中的創新
4.理解佛教哲學研究可使用的不同途徑
1.To learn about the history of the study of Indian Buddhism, different traditions of research, and major scholars and their work
2.To become acquainted with the history of Indian Buddhism and the current state of its research
3.To develop the ability to think theoretically and methodologically, thus getting prepared to innovate in one’s own future work, by studying different research methodologies
4.To understand various approaches to the study of Buddhist philosophy

課程要求

1.每位同學應該積極參與討論每週的議題。
2.期中研究綜述：各位同學可選擇不同的印度佛教的課題並撰寫一篇該課題的研究綜述。課題的例子包括：佛傳、傳記、敘事、結集、印度佛教中的國王（或某一國王）、佛教部派、地區佛教（或某一地區佛教）、大乘的起源、寺院（或某一寺院）、西遊漢僧、印度佛教的消失、佛教婦女、佛教語言、印度佛教教科書、某一佛教哲學家。綜述中參考書目之外部分的長度大約為5000字。
3.對於本課程各週所覆蓋的閱讀材料，必須選擇有興趣的主題，書寫一頁的「閱讀回應」(reading response)共兩篇。回應報告的內容可以包括閱讀總結、批判性分析、心得或探討閱讀材料中的問題。在總結閱讀之外建議包含一些分析、評估之類的個人思考。閱讀回應應當在所回應的材料被討論之前電郵寄給授課老師，並盡量允許教師有足夠時間在上課討論前閱讀。
4.必須繳交6000–7000字與課程內容相關的期末論文一篇。
