課程概述 |
This is a course on Wittgenstein’s Philosophical Investigations. We will read §§185-693, which is roughly the second half of the book and about 200 pages. It is a continuation from last semester, but newcomers are welcome. Wittgenstein lived from1889 until 1951, and the Philosophical Investigations appeared in 1953. We can distinguish three periods in his development, an early period, a middle period of transition, and a late period. This book is the main result of his late period. It contains Wittgenstein’s thoughts from 1929 until 1949, about language, meaning, rules, certainty, communication, psychological states, and other issues in philosophy of mind. It does not offer a theory. In fact, it is anti-theory. It is a classic in analytic philosophy of language. We will use the translation by Anscombe, which is available as bilingual edition. Knowledge of German is not required, but will be helpful. |
課程目標 |
The course objective is to arrive at a better understanding of language and mind, the way language is used and how it functions. It is also about intentionality, meaning, and everyday psychological concepts. |
