The course aims to provide instrumental knowledge to understand the context and contents of Western works on Chinese philosophy. It will be proceeded on a comparative reading of Benjamin Schwartz’s The World of Thought in Ancient China (Cambridge: Harvard UP, 1985) and A. C. Graham’s Disputers of the Tao (La Salle: Open Court, 1988). In order to illuminate the nature of issue, some relatively short articles will be also provided (to be announced in the beginning of the seminar). The instructor requests all participants to make presentations on the assigned parts in the reading materials, and to write a term paper on relevant topics. Grades will be made on a term paper (60%), presentations (30%), and participation/other contributions (10%). |
