課程概述 |
Contemporary cognitive science, taking "computation" and "representation" as its two main core concepts, studies the "realm of the mental" in scientific ways. Philosophy has been participating in forming, shaping, and developing cognitive science. This course will introduce philosophical issues and problems about cognitive scientific researches. Here are some: cognitive structure (the debate between classicism and connectionism), modularity, level analysis and hierarchical ontology, mental content and mental causation, consciousness and the meta-hard problem, and concept and conceptual combination. |
課程目標 |
To introduce students to philosophical issues concerning contemporary cognitive sciences. |
課程要求 |
• One research report (30 %):
(1) 4-6 pages long.
(2) A research report is not yet a paper. However, it must not be mere organized summaries of the topics to survey. The idea is that you pick up a specific issue or problem and find out what philosophers have said for and against it. Try to show the dialectics (the line of argumentation, the development of thoughts).
(3) no less than three references (articles/books not included in our reading materials)
• Term Paper (50%):
(1) Term paper topic can be an enlarged and revised version of your research report, or it may be one of the topics you find interesting in our class. Make sure to consult with me before you decide your paper topic.
(2) 10-15 pages, 1.5 spaced, reference pages not included.
(3) Proposal (10%): The proposal for your term paper states in a general and sketchy way what you intend to do in your term paper. It should include the problem/issue to be discussed, why it is a problem, arguments for and against some proposed solutions to the problem, some difficulties you might have, and your own view. Possible further readings should also be included. Presentation of the proposal takes one hour. However, you should spend no more than 15 minutes in giving your presentation. The rest is to be devoted to discussions (criticisms, clarifications, suggestions, etc.). You should give everyone a copy of your proposal one week before your own presentation.
(4) Presentation (10%): to present assigned reading materials; one hour talk, two hours discussions; prepare a copy of your handout for the class. |
