課程概述 |
This course explores the field of global health, examining epidemic disease and health care dilemmas, through the unique lens of anthropology. We will ask some of the following questions: How can the knowledge and methodological approach of medical anthropology contribute to both researching and addressing the health concerns of the poor? In what ways does anthropology’s attention to culture not only enrich our understanding of the conditions and dynamics of global health? How can it help us to engage with and think critically about global health interventions? Throughout the course, students will be encouraged to think creatively and critically about health problems and policies as well as scrutinize the value systems that underlie the discipline of global health itself.
This course is organized into two parts. In the first part, we will examine the social conditions behind epidemic disease, the emergence of the field of global health, and the humanitarian spirit that has inspired global health activists. In the second part, we will explore the persistent challenges and uncertainties that continue to thwart the ideals of global health, from environmental racism, to institutional disparities, to public apprehensions. However, we will conclude with the hopeful perspective that both global health activists and anthropologists bring to this field. |

At the end of the course, the students are expected to be able to:
1. reflect critically on the origins of global health
2. demonstrate basic understanding of the social roots to epidemic disease
3. demonstrate critical perspective on the challenges of global health and the possibilities of anthropological work in this field |

課程要求 |
1. Attendance & Participation: In this course, you will be expected to be an “active participant” in class, this means that you will:
‧ attend all classes (students should contact the professor before class, if at all possible, if he or she will be unable to attend class).
‧ come to class having completed your assigned readings.
‧ engage in class discussions and small group discussions.
2. Class assignments & homework: Students are expected to participate in various classroom activities and submit their work for evaluation. The activities will include in-class assignments, student presentations, writing workshops, brief homework exercises, and other activities.
3. Essay assignments: Each student will complete two writing assignments for this class. The guidelines for each assignment will be posted online. The key point for evaluating all writing assignments will be for students to demonstrate that they have good understanding of the key concepts of the course and can use them in their writing. |
