Course Description

Generally the Southeast Asian culture can be seen as a diverse historical complex of local pre-history culture, Indian-influenced culture, Chinese-influenced culture, Islamic-influenced culture and European-influenced culture. Among them the Indian-influenced culture had not reached to the Philippines, and Austronesian peoples stayed in large part of the archipelago area. In this point of view, culture and history of Taiwan have very close relation to Southeast Asia, and many scholars, including officials of ASEAN, think Taiwan is involved in Southeast Asian area. This course will shows the cultural and historical relation of Taiwan and Southeast Asia with various evidences; architecture (fortification, city, building, house), household goods (textile, ceramics etc.), performing arts, religious remains (megalithic), and cultural elements (life style and languages).
