Evaluation:
There will be four short assignments( each 5-10 pages) on topics related to cognitive semantics (45%) and a term paper (40%). Class participation and contribution to class account for the balance (15%).
Course Objectives: this course is an introduction to main issues in cognitive semantics and the tools needed
to do semantic analysis. We will discuss how semantic properties are discovered, defined and
realized in language and how these tools and assumptions are put to use in the following areas:
language and space, motion, emotion, tense , aspect and modality. We will also examine in some
detail the mechanisms of semantic change.
Your participation:
l. Presentation of required reading: each of you will present several required readings throughout the semester. The presenter is responsible for organizing the discussion around the comments.
2. Comments: each of you will write a short (200-300) critical response to the required reading, these comments are to be sent to the email list for this class by 8 m the evening before each class for which there is reading. Each participant should read, print and bring the comments to class and be ready to discuss the ideas in them.
3. Presentation of projects: On Nov.3, each participant will present their topic ( about 10 minutes) to the rest of the class, with a sort handout outlining the hypothesis, preliminary supporting evidence, and data sources.
Guidelines for presenting reading assignments:
-- plan to take about 10 minutes for your presentation
-- state what you think is important about this reading
-- offer 2 or three questions hat you’d like to see form the basis for the day’s discussion of that reading.
-- offer your won alternative analysis or understanding of the point the author is making
