課程概述 |
COGNITIVE APPROACH TO METAPHOR (LAKOFF AND JOHN?SON 1980) CONSIDERS METAPHOR PRIMARILY A MATTER OF THINK?ING, BUT ONLY DERIVATIVELY A MATTER OF LANGUAGE (KOVECSES 2002). SUCH PARADIGM TREATS VERBAL METAPHORS AS MANIFESTATIONS OF THOUGHT, IGNORING THAT THE NON-VERBAL REPRESENTATIONS, WHICH IS HIGHLY IMPORTANT IN THE UNDERSTANDING OF CULTURE, MAY ALSO SUBSTANTIATE WHAT WE HAVE KNOWN SO FAR ABOUT METAPHOR.
IN VIEW OF THE FACT THAT A COMPREHENSIVE THEORY OF METAPHOR SHOULD NOT IGNORE MULTIMODAL REPRESENTATIONS, THIS COURSE WILL FOCUS ON VERBAL AS WELL AS NON-VERBAL REPRESENTATION OF METAPHOR, GRADUALLY BROADENING FROM VERBAL, VIA PICTORIAL, TO MULTIMODAL METAPHOR. IT IS INTENDED FOR STUDENTS WITHOUT PREVIOUS OR SPECIAL BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE IN METAPHOR.
