課程概述 |
This course surveys the theory and practice of using recordings of electrical brain response to study cognition. We will focus on what brainwaves reveal about language processing at various levels by covering classic findings and basic paradigms. The course will involve a combination of lecture, article reading, discussion, and demonstrations. |

This course aims to give students:
• a basic level of competence with the technical and theoretical aspects of electrophysiological recordings
• knowledge of how electrophysiological methods can be used to investigate various aspects of language and cognitive processing
• practice with critically reading and evaluating research articles in this area
• experience in designing and writing experiments using electrophysiological methods.

課程要求 |
As the aim of this course is to survey various aspects of language processing approached by electric recordings of human brain activity within a semester, it will be content- and reading-intensive. Students are expected to finish the reading and coming to class prepared to discuss it. Students will also be given assignments every week, as an immediate review of the key concept covered in that week, as well as a final paper to demonstrate integration of the content covered in this class and students’ own research ideas. |

Readings in this class include some chapters from ‘An Introduction to the Event-related Potential Technique’ by Steven Luck, review articles, and experimental reports. The assigned readings will be available electronically, in PDF format. You are not expected to read all papers from beginning to end. When doing your readings, try to keep these questions in mind:
For review articles:
• What are the central issues in this field?
• What are the advantages of using electrophysiology to address those issues?
• How have electrophysiological techniques been used in this field?
o What are the typical experimental designs?
o What components have been focused on?
• What insights about cognitive/physiology have been obtained?
For experimental articles:
• What is the goal of the study?
• What is the specific hypothesis tested?
• How does the experimental design address the question?
• What are the possible outcomes of the experiment and what would each mean?
• What was the actual outcome?
• What are the authors’ conclusions?
• Are there alternative explanations for this outcome? (eg., confounding factors)
• What are the outstanding questions and how might you address them?

Final paper |

A 5 page short paper including research question, experimental design, predictions on specific ERP components, and associated literature review. Students are welcome to discuss with me about their papers through out the semester during office hours. |

Paper presentations |
30% |
After the mid-term exam, each student will be required to do two paper presentations. In each presentation, the presenter should try to concisely summarize the research goal(s), methods, hypotheses, predictions and the actual results of the paper, and prepare some discussion points (e.g., possible confounds or things left to do). The purpose of this task is to encourage students to read actively and critically on the one hand, and prepare them for their final paper on the other. Presentations on long papers will be divided and coordinated by two students. |

Mid-term exam |

The midterm exam will be worth 20% of the final grade. Short answer and essay questions will be derived from lecture material and assigned readings that are largely covered in the weekly homework. |

Homework |

Before the mid-term exam, two to three short-answer review questions about the main points conveyed in recent lectures will be given at the end of the Wednesday classes and due before the next Wednesday class. The concepts asked in these questions will form a substantial part of the midterm exam; therefore it is worth answering these questions thoroughly and correctly as it helps you prepare for the exams on a regular basis. Students are allowed to work together on homework, until it comes to writing the answer. The final homework grade will be calculated out of a maximum of 20 (two points per question). Since there will be more than 10 questions in total, a student can miss or fail some questions and still obtain a perfect score. Scores above twenty will be counted as extra-credit. |

Being prepared means having read the assigned articles and having your initial thoughts or questions about them before coming to class. Participating in class discussions is valuable because it makes you an active learner and greatly increases the likelihood that you will understand and retain the material. See below for tips for effective reading. |
