說明
1.
Paper presentation
60%
Each student will be required to present on 4 short papers. The presentation should concisely summarize the research question(s), hypothesis, experimental design, findings, and the conclusions of that paper. You are welcome to discuss your presentations with me beforehand during office hours. Extra credits can also be earned by presenting additional papers.
2.
Homework
30%
From week 3 to week 17, a short paragraph (in either English or Chinese) commenting on one of the readings assigned in each week is due on the prior Sunday at 5pm. The content of the paragraph may include: critics on the experimental design or the logic of the authors’ arguments, alternative interpretations of the findings, views/findings in the theoretical or applied linguistics that may challenge or support the conclusions the authors drew, background questions that you deem critical for understanding the paper, outstanding issues, possible experiments that may be designed to address these issues, etc. The paragraph will be graded on a pass/fail basis (two points per paragraph). Extra credits can be earned by writing paragraphs on additional papers.
3.
Come to class prepared and participate
10%
Being prepared means having read the assigned articles and having your initial thoughts or questions about them before coming to class. Participating in class discussions is valuable because it makes you an active learner and greatly increases the likelihood that you will understand and retain the material. See below for tips for effective reading.
