課程概述 |
This course aims to provide an introduction to the basic concepts of language functions in Jackobson’s view, including referential, expressive, phatic and metalinguistic function. The course attempts primarily to point out how language affects one’s thoughts and consequently, his social behavior. Empathy in communication requires the willingness as well as the imaginative leap to understand others (or others’ emotions) via language so that the act of telling and listening yields therapeutic value. Topics on ‘Thinking for speaking’ hypothesis, reference and deixis, metaphorical mapping of perception, intersubjectivity, empathy, culture and context, and narrative medicine, will be touched upon. |
課程目標 |
Empathy in communication is to bear in mind that our readers and listeners are human: they wish to be heard and respected. Empathy shows up in communication in when we talk (including self talk), listen, and when give feedback, which can also be applied to teaching or in doctor-patient encounters. We communicate in order to share, and to build bonding, especially when it comes to the understanding of the suffering of each other. This course is intended for linguistics as well as non-linguistics majors. It is hoped that students will understand the importance of empathy in human interaction, by also touching the role culture plays in this aspect. Even though the intellectuals nowadays are trained to view themselves as independent thinkers, it is important to make clear how we humans appreciate the ability to synchronize one’s thoughts and actions with others in the group, which is an asset much needed in this globalized world. |
