課程概述

Course description: This course offers an introduction to some of the fundamental principles, methodologies, and techniques of research in music theory/analysis, and in historical musicology. Among the topics covered in music theory are Schenkerian theory, music semiotics, implication-realization model, multimedia musical analysis, and time studies. Among the topics covered in historical musicology are editing, manuscript examination, historiography, and the “new” musicology. 

課程目標
──介紹音樂學研究中的主要方法及應用
──培養對音樂學學術文章之閱讀、理解、批判能力
──培養對音樂研究文獻中所隱含的各項觀念、想法,與預設立場的指認、批判能力
──介紹學術寫作的方式、培養尋找研究題目的能力
 
課程要求
Music Theory and Analysis Part:
1. 課堂討論:針對指定的閱讀作業進行討論、批判、論辯
2. 平日作業:針對指定的閱讀文章,寫出摘要
3. 學期報告──包括口頭報告與書面報告二部分

Historical Musicology Part:
Class meetings will focus on discussions of readings. A short response paper (approximately one page) on each week’s readings must be submitted during the class meeting for that week. In addition, there may be small hands-on assignments (such as the editing of original manuscripts).

Finally, there will be a research project, on a related topic of your choice, which will culminate in a presentation and paper.

Overall grades will be calculated as follows:

Class participation (attendance, contribution to discussions, response papers) 50%
Research project (presentation and paper of ca. 8 pages) 50%
