隨著全球音樂工業、傳播媒體的發展，世界不同地區、民族的音樂文化逐漸突破地理限制向各地傳遞，除了大家較為熟悉的西洋古典、英美日韓流行，以及華人自己的音樂之外，尚有更多來自不同地區的音樂等著我們去認識、欣賞。本課程將透過圖像、影音資料欣賞，必要時輔以電腦軟體，以生活、史地背景為出發點，介紹世界各地區不同民族在不同時空背景中創造、傳承的音樂文化。課程同時融入近現代唱片工業發展、音樂市場變遷等議題，帶領學生認識世界各地區、民族的傳統或古典音樂，在「全球化」時代中如何發展，如何跨越地理界限與其他民族交流互動。
