課程概述 |
At first voice seems simple. We often think of voice as immediate. Yet upon reflection, it seems always configured within a culturally specific framework. Although voice seems to index a stable presence or subjectivity, we also know that voices may be thrown, parodied, appropriated, lost, or vocoded. In this course, we explore four different questions about voice: (1) voice’s materiality versus sociality; (2) voice as expressing a singular subjectivity versus voice as a negotiation of multiple subject positions; (3) voice as performed versus animated; (4) voice as “issuing from” versus “acting upon.” We will touch upon questions of register, dialogue, and ideology. In addition to a survey of the literature on voice, the course will also engage in listening, observation, and experimentation with voices, developing our ability to describe voice better and also questioning our assumptions about voice. |

課程要求 |
The course will be conducted in a seminar format, with students taking turns presenting on the readings. for presentations, participants in the seminar are encouraged to think of a concrete example which might compare to or otherwise illustrate the case or concepts in the reading. Participants in the seminar are required to prepare for class by writing a short weekly response (250-500 words) and to participate in class discussions. They will also complete a final project (4000 – 5000 words or 1000 words plus audio / video work) |
