At first voice seems simple. We often think of voice as immediate. Yet upon reflection, it seems always configured within a culturally specific framework. Although voice seems to index a stable presence or subjectivity, we also know that voices may be thrown, parodied, appropriated, lost, or vocoded. In this course, we explore four different questions about voice: (1) voice’s materiality versus sociality; (2) voice as expressing a singular subjectivity versus voice as a negotiation of multiple subject positions; (3) voice as performed versus animated; (4) voice as “issuing from” versus “acting upon.” We will touch upon questions of register, dialogue, and ideology. In addition to a survey of the literature on voice, the course will also engage in listening, observation, and experimentation with voices, developing our ability to describe voice better and also questioning our assumptions about voice.
