課程概述

An introductory course on the history of Japanese and Korean popular music and culture. It will focus more on Japanese history, but it will also explore respective developments in each country from a comparative perspective as well as cultural exchanges between them. It is intended to be a step toward further discussion about the connections and particularities of popular music and culture in East Asia.

課程目標
The main purpose of this course is to introduce popular hits and their social contexts in a chronological order, familiarize students with actual sounds and cultural backgrounds, and enable them to reflect upon the Taiwanese situation in an auditory manner. The instructor will share sound clips and provide song texts and notations whenever necessary. Further materials in any form will be introduced to interested students.
課程要求
Language Proficiency:
The lecture is held in English. Throughout the course, several main textbooks written in Japanese, Korean and English will be consulted. The ability to read either Japanese or Korean materials is preferred but not required. The instructor will encourage students to understand the historical processes with translations and audio-visual materials. Students are expected to be active in learning these languages.

Assignments:
1. At least quarter to half page weekly response notes on listening examples. Due by the day before each lecture day 10pm on CEIBA. Examples to be handed before each next lecture on CEIBA. Students are expected to listen to the sound clips carefully before the class so as to participate actively in class discussion.
2. Group presentation at the end of the semester. Each group, supposedly consisting of 3 - 5 students, will come to see me or let me know via email to clarify a topic by the end of the semester. Grouping and a consulting schedule to be announced later.
3. 5 - 10-page term paper based on class presentation or individual interests. Due by 6/21 by email or by hand.
