This is a one-credit intensive course jointly taught by international scholars. Queer Epistemologies aims to investigate how queer theory interweaves with, problematizes, and innovates across diverse domains of knowledge, thereby expanding epistemic approaches to the world. The course begins with “Queer and Sea,” examining how queer theory unsettles binary and heteronormative understandings of nature and the environment while engaging ecocriticism and more-than-human forms of care. It then moves to “Queer and New Materialisms," considering the entanglements of humans and nonhumans and the agency, vitality, and materiality of things. In the second half, the focus shifts to the social sciences and clinical domains: “Queer and Behavioral Science Research” critically interrogates how scientific methods and knowledge production normativize sex and gender, and “Queer and Biomedical Paradigms” reflects on how medical institutions shape, regulate, and at times pathologize sexuality and the body. Through sustained engagement with these four axes, the course emphasizes that queerness is not merely a descriptor of identity or desire but an epistemic stance that challenges prevailing knowledge frameworks and reconceptualizes questions of agency and ethical relation.

1. Establish students’ foundational understanding of the relationship between queer theory and epistemology, and cultivate critical thinking skills.
2. Examine how queer perspectives intervene in diverse fields—ecologies, new materialisms, behavioral science, and biomedicine—and how they challenge conventional knowledge frameworks.
3. Analyze the gendered and sexual norms embedded within different knowledge systems, and learn to identify their impacts on bodies, environments, and societies.
4. Promote interdisciplinary dialogue and theoretical praxis, developing students’ ability to apply queer epistemics within their own research or professional domains.
5. Guide students to interrogate entanglements among humans and nonhumans, matter and agency, science and ethics, fostering pluralistic and inclusive epistemic perspectives.
