課程概述	自中華民國於1911年成立以來，戰爭成為歷史的循環式母題，不斷重現，影響所及造成數以百萬計人民流離失所，甚或喪失寶貴性命。因此，1949年後國府退居臺灣，自五零年代到八零年代，歷經反共文學、現代主義與鄉土寫實主義與後現代主義，戰爭小說成為一種重要的「副文類」，小說家拿戰爭當創作題材的案例屢見不鮮，辛亥革命、北伐、第一次國共內戰、對日抗戰、第二次國共內戰，乃至於韓戰與越戰，無一遺漏。從課程設計的角度說來，本課程的架構建立在兩種歷史上：戰爭史與文學史。課程的前六週透過文本探討來建立戰爭史架構，這一部分所包含的戰爭包括辛亥革命到韓戰的種種重要戰爭；課程的其餘部分，則搭配文學史演進，透過文本來呈現各個分期小說如何處理戰爭的題材，也就是如何透過戰爭這個情節主軸來顯現中國與臺灣在社會、政治、經濟等各方面所受到的影響。就此而論，這部分課程所要聚焦的，是反共小說如何反省國共內戰，是現代主義如何以實驗性的技巧重寫戰爭史，是鄉土寫實主義如何檢討臺灣受到越戰的衝擊，還有後現代如何透過戰爭小說來質疑歷史。
課程目標	本課程的目的在幫助學生透過戰爭小說來深入了解歷史與人性。首先就歷史而言，臺灣的戰爭小說本質上就帶有歷史小說的特性，因為歷史上的戰爭往往就鑲嵌在小說作品裡，兩者合而為一。因此，在課程進行的過程中，學生必須透過了解Georg Lukacs、Hayden White、王德威以及Dominick LaCapara等理論家的歷史小說學說來構思「何謂戰爭小說？」以及「戰爭小說與歷史的關係為何？」這兩個問題的答案。其次，就更深刻的哲學層次而言，戰爭是對於人性的試煉與考驗，戰爭小說作品本身就是小說家對於人性問題的解答。從自然主義小說理論的角度看來，這些小說家無非就是把其筆下主角丟進戰爭的歷史情境中，以觀察科學實驗一般的精神來呈現人類在被迫陷入絕境時，會做出什麼抉擇。是像〈蠟臺兒〉的主角一樣犧牲自己，捐軀沙場，還是像〈龍天樓〉裡的主角一樣，苟且偷生，才有機會說出自己的際遇？同樣是吃人肉，〈杜鵑啼血〉與〈鄉村的教師〉兩篇故事的主角有何不同動機？吃人肉一事對其命運又有何影響？〈六月裡的玫瑰花〉與〈小寡婦〉裡面的美國軍人是怎麼被戰爭逼瘋的？這些問題都將在本課程中獲得解答。
課程要求	1. 課堂參與是評分之重要憑據，如無故缺課將影響成績。 2. 學期成績之比例如下：期中、期末報告各佔30%，每週報告與課堂表現佔40%。 3. 期中、期末報告之篇幅最少三張A4紙（單行間距，最多五張），以電腦打字方式完成。 4. 原則上，期中、期末書面報告是以課堂口頭報告為基礎進行改寫的，但報告內容必須符合學生自己所熟悉之某種學術論文格式（如MLA與APA等）。 5. 口頭報告之頻率將視選課學生之多寡而決定。
