This course is an introduction to Mandarin, the official language of China and Taiwan, and one of the official languages of Singapore. It aims to master Mandarin pronunciation, and to develop ability to engage in simple, practical conversations in ways that are culturally and sociolinguistically appropriate. Students will also acquire a basic proficiency in the reading and writing in traditional characters. Thorough preparation is an essential requirement of this course. Students are expected to study the course materials thoroughly prior to each class in order to effectively participate in the classroom activities. In addition, during the process of language learning, students will also learn basic information about Chinese culture and traditions.
