課程概述 |
Course Description
A mainly practical introduction to Chinese-English comparative/contrastive analysis for translators/interpreters. We will begin with Linguistics, from the ground up, starting with Phonetics and Phonology, moving on to Morphology and Syntax, then Semantics, Pragmatics and Discourse, even Sociolinguistic levels. We will review work in translation studies on shifts and strategies. Time permitting, we will consider Rhetoric, Stylistics and Register in comparative context. As much as possible, we will historicize our comparative knowledge. The ultimate philosophical issues in the course are: Are we mechanically decoding into a translator's interlanguage, then recoding? Or do we sometimes decode into the language of thought, and then recode into the target language, assuming all human beings have the same cognitive abilities? |

課程目標 |
Course Objectives
1) Practice or reinforce analytical abilities at different levels of analysis in both Chinese and English.
2) Learn the basics of phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics in so far as they relate to Chinese/English comparison, and test these concepts out on literary prose and poetry.
3) Assess relevance of existing comparative/contrastive typologies (by Vinay and Dalbernet, for instance) to CE and EC analysis.
4) Apply our analytical and comparative tools to texts we think are worth reading and stand up to rigorous analysis.
5) Understand the main events in the formation of the Chinese and English languages. |

Requirements:
1) On a weekly basis: a) a translation and analysis to discuss in class. b) in class exercises.
2) Every few classes: a presentation of some sort.
3) A final project. |

何善芬，英漢語言對比研究。I have been looking hard for a book in English, but there's really nothing that impresses me. This book seems pretty good, and covers a lot of ground, including phonetics as well as rhetoric. It might be too basic in places, and we may have to supplement it when we get to grammar. |
