課程概述 |
? This practical course focuses on training students’ competence in translating from Chinese into English (C-E). On the basis of scaffolding learning, the course consists of two parts. The first section lays foundation for students to develop a critical eye towards the primary issues in translation as a whole and most importantly those when the directionality of C-E translation is concerned; these include the lingua-cultural understanding of the two main languages; the para-translation skills vital to the actual translation process; the essential translation techniques in dealing with C-E translation; and the awareness of avoiding Chinglish in translation. The second part zooms into the intensive translation practices and discussion aiming at familiarising students with the linguistic and textual features C-E translation. |
課程目標 |
? To develop critical thinking about various issues and difficulties rising in the translation process
? To develop awareness of translation problems when translating from Chinese into English
? To understand the similarity and disparity of cultural mind-set and linguistic structure between Chinese and English
? To develop decision-making and problem-solving skills during the translation process
? Be able to acquire useful revision and editing skills of English output
? To understand that the translation rendered should be a final product that is the result of careful thought and thorough discussion |
課程要求 |
? Complete and submit the weekly or fortnightly assignments (translation and revision) for the purpose of peer review and in-class discussion at least THREE days before class (see instructions in class)
? Present their translation commentaries and peer-review in the first part of classes
? Understand that any unjustified absence and late submission of assignments for up to two times will result into a ZERO of the entire assessment
? Not submit any overdue coursework/assignments without any prior discussion/negotiation with the course coordinator; in general, an extension will only be granted for serious circumstances that require compassionate consideration, such as sudden serious illness, loss of family or a car accident
? NOT expect spoon-fed teaching from the lecturer
? Be proactively participating in their own learning process, both in and after class, including (in-class) translation practice, self-critic, peer-review as well as mini presentation on a regular basis
? Be able to work individually on and responsible for their coursework, including paying attention to details when writing assignments and punctual submission of any types, either through e-mail or in hard-copy
? Be good team players when pair/teamwork is required
? Use NTU e-mail as the channel of the first point of contact; if you have other e-mail preference, please state it as well
? Discuss with the lecturer with regard to their learning process at any time during the semester
? Online teaching mode would be blended into the semester, especially for special sessions, such as presentations and guest seminars
*The final version is to be announced at the beginning of the semester.
*The class content schedule may change according to students' learning needs, processes and/or speeds. |
