課程概述 |
This course investigates the contexts of literary translation. These contexts are various: literary, of course, but also poetic, aesthetic, social, political or ideological, "cultural", and so forth. For the most part we will be dealing with modern societies, especially in English and Chinese speaking countries, but if students are interested we can consider the translation of premodern texts, which requires us to ask questions like: What is 'literature' (noun)? What is 'literary' (adj) translation? We will read short theoretical texts on literary translation but for the most part the "theory" will be part of the background to the critical articles by local and international scholars we will read. This is also a practical course, what's called a "translation workshop". We'll discuss our own translations in class, mainly fiction, but depending on student interests we can also work on prose, poetry and drama. If student interest justifies it, I can arrange talks by practicing literary translators (some of whom actually make a living just doing literary translation!) and may be even by scholars of literary translation. Sometimes we'll get out of the classroom and try to go figure out what the literary translation community in Taiwan is up to. |

課程要求 |
1) Regular weekly participation, including reading responses, presentations, class leadership, and discussion (though not every time!).
2) One term paper. It doesn't have to be long. It just has to articulate a thesis on a specific topic, and it has to be in academic format, engaging with previous scholars, presenting your own distinct point of view. It‘s easy: compare a pair of translations of anything and come up with ideological, gender-related, historical, or cultural explanations. We'll see how other people do it before doing it ourselves. You develop a topic by reading other people's attempts to think critically about literary translation, by doing literary translation yourself, and by comparing translations of works you love to read.
3) One annotated literary translation. Again, it doesn't have to be long, but it does have to be wonderful. It can be on anything you want, but my advice would be to do something contemporary, not a "classic" (and if you want to work on a classic be prepared to understand canon formation as well). The danger of course is doing something nobody knows about. So my revised advice would be read widely and translate something you love. If you want something to work on you can do something by either Chang Yao-jen or DJ Liu, two writers I'm working on now. |

1) A selection of short articles on CE and EC literary translation, drawn from the pages of journals that serve as fora for the local (including Hong Kong) translation, especially 翻譯學研究集刊, 編譯論叢, 廣譯 intended to introduce students to the theories and methodologies and - most importantly - the topics of literary translation research. We'll decide on the topics the first class and I'll send a list of texts as soon as I can.
2) David Lodge's book The Art of Fiction and its Chinese translation 小說的五十堂課。We'll work through the 50 essays in the book in English and translations, about three essays a week. It's a wonderful introduction to the language of fiction and for us the translation will serve as a way of considering style (over fifty different writers over 300 years wrote the selections in the original, but only one person translated them). |

Chang, Yvonne. Literary Culture in Taiwan: Martial Law to Market Law. Comment: Chang is the most important scholar of Taiwan literature, and has centralized the study of the sociology of Taiwan literature under the rubric of the 'literary field'.
Eagleton, Terry. The Event of Literature. Comment: Eagleton revisits his classic argument that "literature" lacks an essence.
Lefevere, Andre. The Manipulation of Literary Fame. Comment: Lefevere is with Steiner the most literate of the theoretically inclined writers on literary translation.
Pollard, David. Translation and Creation: On Early Modern Chinese Translation of Foreign Fiction. Comment: Pollard et al make genre fiction (sci fi etc.) relevant to Chinese 'modernity', arguing that it introduced new, 'modern' ways of thinking.
Steiner, George. After Babel. Comment: It may seem very hard going, but it is monumental. Steiner has thought deeply about language and literature and there is more to get out of the book than 'the hermeneutic motion'.
Venuti, Lawrence. The Translation Studies Reader. Comment: This collection contains many classics of literary translation studies, from Nabokov to Steiner, not that surprising given Venuti's own interests.
Venuti, Lawrence. The Translator's Invisibility. Comment: Venuti explains the sociopolitical background to the ideology of the translator's invisibility.
Xie, Ming. Ezra Pound and the Appropriation of Chinese Poetry. Comment: This is the most sophisticated take on the language used to translate Chinese poetry as well as the language of modernism, which reacted to sentimentalism and cliches in the Victorian era literature.
李奭學,中國晚明與歐洲文學。Comment: We lack the background to be able to follow Prof. Li very far, but this is a solid work on premodern EC translation. |
