課程概述 |
This course will cover the following topics in physics:
1. Mechanics
Review of Newtonian mechanics: F=ma, spring, momentum, angular momentum, energy, conservation, diffusion, Brownian motion, membrane transport, and ultrasound. Principle of least action. Noether's theorem.
2. Special and General Theory of Relativity
Length contraction, time-dilation, E=mc2, anti-matter and positron emission tomography (PET). Equivalence principle. Space-time curvature. Einstein field equation. Dirac equation.
3. Electricity and Magnetism
Classical electricity and mechanism. Defibrillator. Photodynamic therapy. Laser applications in biology and medicine.
4. Optics and Microscopy
Reflection, refraction, scattering, diffraction, Huygens-Fresnel Principle, total international reflection. Fiber optics. Structure of the eye. Bright field microscopy: applications to histology (hematoxylin and eosin/H&E imaging). Fluorescence microscopy: labelling of cellular organelles, antibody labeling, green fluorescent proteins. High throughput tissue cytometry and precision medicine.
5. Quantum mechanics
Wave-particle duality, Schrödinger equation, atomic structure. Molecular spectroscopy (absorption, emission, Raman) and applications. Spin, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Quantum field theory.

課程目標 |
This course intends to provide the students with an introduction of the basic concepts in physics. Classical mechanics, statistical physics, electromagnetism, and modern physics (including quantum physics) will be covered. Whenever appropriate, I will discuss how physical concepts are linked to the development in biology and medicine. |
