Mathematics for Chemists aims to assist students in the Department of Chemistry in NTU to prepare for the mathematical tools useful for college-level Physical Chemistry courses, in particular for Physical Chemistry I (Chemical Thermodynamics) and Physical Chemistry II (Quantum Chemistry). The focus of this one-semester course is on linear algebra, integral transformations, simple differential equations, and group theory. In additional to teaching the technical aspects of these mathematical tools, emphasis will be put on a clear conceptual understanding of the idea of vector and function space and selected special topics relevant in solving chemical problems. Nevertheless, we will not dwell on the abstract mathematics, and instead a hands-on approach will be adopted to enable the students to gradually build up the entailed intuitions. Students are expected to spend a significant amount of time off-class in extra reading and solving homework problems.
