課程概述

The medium of instruction for this course is English. This course is designed to introduce you to the science of Psychology, and provide an overview about the broad and diverse disciplines in Psychology.

The topics to be covered in this course include: the history and theories of psychology, research methods, neuroscience and behaviour, sensation and perception, lifespan development, learning and memory, psychological disorders and interventions, social and personality psychology, health psychology, etc. There will be a special topic lecture at the final class, and the content will be determined and voted by the class. I am giving you the autonomy to decide what you want to learn more about Psychology. Please tell me what interests you!

The lectures will incorporate relevant research findings, videos, and demonstrations relating to each week's topic.

Frequently Asked Questions with Answers
Q: What is this course like?
A: The course will have a midterm and a final exam. You will be asked to participate in online class forums and complete quizzes/reflections, which are designed to consolidate learning and facilitate the development of critical thinking skills. There is one assignment that you would have sufficient time to work on over the term, and there are opportunities to get easy bonus marks.

Q: Do I need to attend lectures and do the assigned readings?
A: The choice is yours to attend lectures and skim/read the readings or not. Most students found attending the lectures helpful in maximizing their learning outcome. Each week’s lecture slides are made by me. They are based on the article chapters from Noba but are condensed and elaborated. In the past, a number of students succeeded in my course by just attending the lecture and studying the lecture slides.

There will be five marked quizzes and reflection exercises to be done in class throughout the term.

Q: What should I do if I missed a lecture?
A: You will have a chance to find a “study buddy” in the first lecture. The purpose is to help each other take notes, which can help you catch up with class.

Q: What should I do if I missed the midterm exam?
A: There will be no makeup exams. If you missed the exam for a valid reason that was brought to the instructor’s attention before the exam (e.g., sick leave), your final exam grade will account for 70% of your final course grade.

Expectations for this course
Prior to each lecture, you are highly encouraged to review previous lecture notes. If you wish, you could also quickly skim through the Noba readings to know what content you are expecting to learn before each lecture. The lectures will elaborate on the Noba chapters by bringing in research findings, demonstrations, videos, or guest lectures. Students are encouraged to ask questions or contribute to discussions. However, if you are a bit shy to speak up, you can engage by using our online class forum.

In-class respect
Please aim to arrive and depart on time in order not to disturb your own learning experience and your fellow classmates. If you have any special circumstances, feel free to speak to me/email me beforehand. Electronic devices can be used to take notes or engage in class activities. However, research has shown that taking notes by hand can prevent distraction which helps you and your classmates perform better (i.e., higher grades)!

The medium of instruction for this course is English and we have foreign students in the class. Therefore, it is important to speak as much English as possible to avoid creating the feelings of “talking behind someone’s back 在別人背後說壞話” due to speaking different languages. Do not feel pressured that you have to speak “perfect English” when you want to contribute to class discussions. I am happy to help translate your thoughts to the class if need be. For individual communications that you may come to me or the TA for clarification, you are encouraged to speak English, but I am flexible to speak to you in Mandarin if you wish.

指定閱讀
I understand sometimes it may be hard to afford schooling and nutritious food at the same time as a student. Therefore, there is no required textbook that you need to purchase for this course. Use this saved penny for healthy food that nourishes your mental and physical health!
My lecture slides are a good resource to study directly, which is developed based on chapter readings from Noba, a freely accessible collection of articles written by Psychology experts:https://nobaproject.com/textbooks/introduction-to-psychology-the-full-noba-collection
The original Noba articles will be posted in the course webpage. While some students found reading it helpful, some A+ students did not read it or only skimmed through it, and devote the majority of their time to attending lectures, taking notes, and studying my PowerPoint slides. The PowerPoint slides from the lectures will be provided to you before each lecture begins.

參考書目
While a textbook is not required for you to excel in this course (the exams will only cover content covered in lectures), in the past, some students wish to do further readings (e.g., for personal interest/enhancement; seek clarifications in Mandarin).

1.
Engagement in class discussions
5%
Students are expected and encouraged to participate in class discussions. Discussion is what makes learning fun and relatable! Participation in discussions will also be good evidence that you are keeping up with the course and can enhance your critical thinking skills.
2.
Pop quizzes and reflection
10%
There will be 6 (pass/fail) pop quizzes and 6 reflection exercises to be done during the term in class. The quiz will be related to the course material covered in the previous or during that day’s lecture (after being given time to review). I recognize that you may have to miss a class (for any reason) during the term. To accommodate for this, only 5 out of 6 quizzes/reflection will be counted to your final grade. Therefore, failing to take one of them will not impact your grade.
3.
Midterm exam
35%
The midterm will cover materials from weeks 1 to 6. The exams will be in multiple choice format.
4.
Final exam
35%
The final exam will be cumulative, but more weighting will be on materials from weeks 8-14. The exams will be in multiple choice format.
5.

15%
You will be asked to submit a critical writing task (a two-page summary written in English and in APA format) OR make a scientific poster (using PowerPoint) with a classmate and present it to the class (the poster and presentation will be in English). This will be based on a psychology paper that is related to the course content and interests you.
