課程概述

Climatology is the scientific study of Earth’s climate, commonly defined as the long-term average of weather conditions. As a core subfield of physical geography and atmospheric science, it focuses on describing climatic patterns and explaining the processes that drive climatic variability and change, as well as their real-world impacts. This course provides undergraduate students in geography and earth sciences with a solid foundation in climatological concepts and emphasizes how climate interacts with other components of the Earth system—including hydrology, geomorphology, ecology, and geology—within the broader framework of physical geography and Earth system science.

課程目標
Assist undergraduate geography students in developing a solid understanding of fundamental climatological concepts, including the key variables, processes, and patterns that shape climate across spatial and temporal scales. The course also emphasizes how climate interacts with other components of the Earth system—such as hydrology, geomorphology, ecology, and geology—by influencing water and energy fluxes, landform development, ecosystem dynamics, and surface–atmosphere exchanges. Through this integrative perspective, students will learn to connect climatological principles to broader questions in physical geography and Earth system science and to appreciate the role of climate in explaining environmental variability and change.
