課程概述

The main objectives of this course are to
(1) introduce key physical properties and processes of the ocean at a variety of spatial and temporal scales
(2) understand the driving mechanisms for these characteristics

Special emphasis is placed on applying conservation laws of the fluid to understand how ocean functions.  

課程目標
(1) Seawater properties: temperature, salinity, pressure and density
(2) Global energy budget
(3) Equation of motion on a rotating plane
(4) Balanced flow (geostrophic flow, thermal wind)
(5) Wind-driven circulation (Ekman layer, Sverdrup balance, and Western boundary currents, Vorticity dynamics)
(6) Abyssal ocean
(7) Coastal ocean processes
