Weeks 1 and 2: `The Wonderful World of Proteins: Amino acids, protein structure, protein folding, misfolding, and protein-related diseases. Protein science as `soft-matter science`
Week 3: `The Expanded Genetic Code; discovery of new amino acids`
Weeks 4 and 5: `From Chromosomes to genes to proteins: chromosomes, genes, DNA, mRNA, RNA splicing; transcription and translation; ribosome structure; protein biosynthesis.`
Week 6: `Proteomics; modern mass spectrometry; MALDI-TOF and ESI; protein peptide mass fingerprinting; application to membrane proteins`
Weeks 7, 8, and 9: `Membrane proteins: ion channels and pumps; transmembrane signaling; ABC transporters and G-protein coupled receptors; neuroreceptors `
Weeks 10 and 11: `Metalloproteins: electron carriers and dioxygen carriers; metalloenzymes: activation of dioxygen, hydrogen, molecular oxygen, nitrogen, methane, and carbon dioxide`
Weeks 12 and 13: `DNA/RNA technology: molecular cloning, microarrays; reverse transcriptase, DNA and RNA polymerase; antisense DNA; silencing RNA and RNA interference`
Week 14 and 15: `Carbohydrates: cell surface modulation; cell-cell recognition; integrins; cell-surface antigens; vaccines`.
