課程概述

This course will discuss some selected topics from the classical soft matter systems: polymers, colloidal suspensions, and liquid crystals. The focus is to build some simple and universal understanding about some macroscopic material properties from the microscopic bases. Several basic tools from statistical mechanics will be covered and applied to these soft matter systems as examples. Students need to read some research papers and write an essay. Some starting points in the soft matter literature will be suggested. Based on the essay, a short oral presentation should be prepared. The last part of the course will consist the student presentations.

Establish some important concepts about statistical mechanics. Familiar with the classical soft matter systems. Make contacts with the soft matter research literature.  
課程要求
Attend lectures. Take one exam. Prepare an essay and a short presentation.
