課程概述 |
本課程將討論物理化學研究中科學儀器的設計、選擇和操作中的實際問題。
除講課外,將進行相關的演示和動手實驗(實驗為 optional,學生自選);學生可以使用3D printer 來構建實驗器材。
(1) Signal, background, and noise. Simulate a signal trace at the shot-noise limit.
(2) How to choose the best signal range, for example, in determining the concentration by light absorption measurements.
(3) Demonstrate how a photodiode detector (and its circuit) works; analyze its properties like sensitivity, dynamic range, response time, etc. ***[已備有16個 photodiode 元件 (Hamamatsu S1223-1)]***
(4) Concept of brightness and imaging. |
課程目標 |
Issues to discuss will include the following:
(0) How sensitive, how precise, how accurate are enough? How well can we do?
(i) Response time and sensitivity in detection
(ii) Dynamic range, linearity, saturation …
(iii) Background Vs. noise
(iv) If time allows, we may further discuss efficient local pumping (in a vacuum chamber) and background gases
From a more fundamental level, a student may learn that various instruments and thus different scientific measurements have a few things in common, such that, it will become much easier to understand different experiments that involve quantitative measurements. |
課程要求 |
There are 6 experiments to do:
(a) Build a photodiode detector
(b) Measure the time response of a photodiode detector using an LED light source.
(c) Measure the voltage-time profiles of a capacitor discharging through a resistor; check the effect of various resistance & capacitance.
(d) Measure the light reflectance of a soap film at near-normal incidence, including the time evolution. Deduce the thickness of the soap film from the reflectance data.
(e) Measure the light reflectance of a flat surface (like a piece of glass), including the dependences of the incidence angle and polarization.
(f) Build an absorption photometer (with LED & photodiode) to determine the concentration of a dye solution.
For each experiment, a one-page report is required for every student (both upload a pptx file and hand in a hard copy).
Mid-term: pre representation, per group, U-tube format.
Final: representation, per group, U-tube format. |

Note: an LED is a useful incoherent light source, which can be continuous or pulsed;
a laser pointer is a useful coherent photon source;
