課程概述

Course description: This course is given to graduate students of the Dept. of Geosciences, whose research issues are related to development of geochemical analytical techniques and their application to earth sciences. The topics include (1) sampling methods for different geochemical samples; (2) theoretical and practical aspects of chemical procedures and mass spectrometries; (3) instrumental techniques for high precision determination of trace metals and isotopes; (4) development of frontier analytical methods; and (5) application of analytical techniques to researches of global change and environmental variation. Weekly paper reading, discussion and presentation will play essential roles in class. After taking this class, students will be capable of performing their own thesis research and preparing scientific articles.

Text materials: papers, class handouts.
Grading: Report and presentation, 70%; Final, 30%.

1. Introduction.
2. Chemical procedure for trace metals in carbonates.
3. Chemical procedure for trace metals in sediments.
4. Chemical procedure for U-series in geochemical samples.
5. Trace metal analysis on Q-ICPMS.
6. Sr isotope analysis on MC-ICPMS.
7. U-Th isotopic compositions on Q-ICPMS.
8. U-Th isotopic compositions on MC-ICPMS.
9. Sr/Ca in corals and Mg/Ca in foraminifera.
10. Ba/Ca and Pb/Ca in corals.
11. 230Th dating on coral samples.
12. 230Th dating on speleothems.
13. 230Th/232Th vs. 234U/232Th isochron technique for carbonates.
14. Application of trace metal and isotopic records in carbonates to climatic and enrivornmental change.
15. Final exam.
