..Applied Developmental Psychology (ADP) involves the application of behavioral science research in developmental psychology to policy-making and to educational, clinical, and social settings. Students will learn the application of developmental psychology in contexts such as the school, out-of-home childcare, the legal system, life experience, maltreatment, and cultural context. Topic areas include bullying, school practices, student-teacher interaction, alternative and out-of-home childcare, media influence, child witnesses, juvenile delinquents and offenders. Across the world, the field of applied developmental psychology seeks to enhance the lives of children and families by discussing and studying some of the most critical social issues facing our society. ADP helps inform and improve evidence-based programs, interventions, and polices for children and families.
This course will adopt a problem-solving approach to learning. Students will also be required to collect and present theories and research that could explain and resolve a specific child- or adolescent-related issue. This course will utilize research article and media dissemination, as well as in-depth group discussions in helping students think about critical issues facing children and adolescents from perspectives in developmental psychology. In addition, students will learn and practice research methods and design in APD through group research projects and regular presentations. Students may have the opportunity for practical experience.
