Course Description: Learning to writing well involves acquiring procedural knowledge. Therefore, a class intended to improve writing is best approached as training -- of the sort used in music or sports. Good training programs involve a lot of repetition and practice with non threatening feedback, so that procedural knowledge is acquired gradually in a supportive environment. The seminar will be organized in the following way: (1) In each two-hour lesson, participants will write brief essays during the first hour on some assigned topic using their laptops. Topics would vary: some would be from introductory psychology material; others from current events; (2) a sample of essays would be edited by the instructor using “track changes” and transferred back to all participants’ laptops; (3) Participants would “accept changes” and then compare the unedited versions with the edited versions; (4) We would discuss questions, comments, or other suggestions about the writing samples. |
