課程概述

This senior undergraduate/ graduate student-level course titled China Local Governance is designed to offer critical reviews on political economy of China’s local transition over the past three decades.

課程目標
Students taking this course will be expected to understand latest literature debate on (1) political, social and territorial dynamics at local and between local and extra-local (like central, supranational, global levels); (2) specific urban and rural-related development issues.
課程要求
Each week (except Week1 [introduction], Week 2 [national holiday], Week 7 [national holiday], Week 8 [mid-term essay submission], Week 10 [mid-term essay presentation], Week 17 [end-term project briefing], and Week 18 [end-term project submission]) has three articles as required readings. All students are required to read all three articles and make a critical comment RQA- Reflection (up to 300 words), Question (50-100 words), and Answer (at least1,000 words). Relevant data (pieces of news, other written or video materials and so on) to support your comments are highly encouraged to be attached with you weekly report. This part is 25 %.

In university seminars, students are expected to talk and discuss loudly and voluntarily. Your active participation in the class is very important. In addition, each student must be rotated as a chair for discussion of a paper about one hour (it means three students are appointed for every week). You must read the assigned article very carefully and give us your thoughtful review on the article. You are also advised to read your classmates’ weekly reports critically. This part is 25%.

The other 25% is your mid-term essay. You need to answer the follow question:
Although regime types have been changed in China, there is still certain historical continuality in political and social operations between the dynastic past and the communist nowadays. Discuss. For undergraduates, using certain empirical cases is highly encouraged; for graduate students, please provide more theoretical arguments about mechanisms and effectiveness behind continuities. This exercise will need to be submitted on 04/11 (Week 08- no class on that day).

The final 25% is your final-term literature report. This research proposal exercise is to ask you to think of what are the important and interesting theoretical gaps in the existing literature on either China OR local Studies. Your proposal will be marked at A++ if you reach the following criteria: theoretically innovative, methodologically operational, informatively contented, and logically written. For undergraduate, please following the NSC proposal format; for graduate students, please following the thesis proposal structure. This exercise need to be handed in by 2013/06/20.

All exercises and reports and proposals need to upload in the CEIBA. NO reasons for any kind of late submission are accepted. The score will be marked at grade instead of number.
