課程概述

This English course is offered to students in the Atmospheric, Climate, and Ocean Sciences who desire to have training in technical presentation and scientific communications in English. Effective English presentations and communications in the international meetings, workshops, and conferences is a critical component of a student’s professional life. This course aims to systematically train students in this regard.

To Students:
Dear Students, do not be afraid to attend this English course. You can use Chinese to supplement along the way. Regardless of your English level, this course hopes to provide suitable training accordingly. The final grading will be made according to your attitude and how much progress you made as compared to the beginning, and not based on your existing level of English.

The course structure will include 2 main components, Science Part and Presentation Part.

A. Science Part:
- The scientific scope of the meeting/conference
- The big picture of your science
- Logic flow
- Know your science
- Know your audience
- Define clear scientific questions
- Know the standing of your results
- Understand your results and ‘extracting’ the key findings through true thinking process (滴雞精)
- Think, think, think
- Holistic perspective (要有宏觀)
- Think from readers’ perspective (why a reader needs to know …)
- Useful information to the audience
- Under/over emphasize your results
- Take home message
- Look back holistically to check on clear organization
- Preparation of Q/A, uncertainty, and caveats

B. Presentation Part: Also according to the 2 references books listed below
- Clear .PPT
- Time control (1 slide/1 minute)
- Speak slowly and clearly
- Eye contact with the audience (maybe they are completely lost)
- Less is more
- Do’s vs. Don’ts
- Clear figures (figures for your analysis vs. figures for the audiences)
- Clean presentation and communication (avoid unnecessary information and details)
- Clear Beginning and sharp ending (鳳頭、豬肚、豹尾 still works)

課程目標
Provide as many opportunities as possible for students to express in English. Train students to make well-articulated English presentations and effective communications in science, so as to prepare them professionally.
(meaning of ‘well-articulate’ in the Cambridge Dictionary: able to express thoughts and feelings easily and clearly, or showing this quality)
課程要求
Students will have group presentations as well as individual presentations in English (can supplement with Chinse according to their level). Students are asked to help each other to ask questions, so that the presenter will have a chance to interact with audience and to know what part of the presentation was unclear and whether it was ‘Science part’ or ‘Presentation part’.
