Reading assignment: Ch. 2.6. (Inertiogravity and Kelvin waves) + Vallis 6.4.16.4.3 (Rossby waves in a single layer)
Study assignments:
1. We linearize momentum and mass conservation equations to obtain the dispersion relation for shallowwater waves. What are the assumptions we made for these waves?
2. These waves may have preferred direction of propagation. For example, Kelvin wave leans on a boundary on its right in N.H, Rossby wave propagates westward relative to the mean flow. What are the associated mechanisms for such propagation?
3. Among inertiogravity, Kelvin, and Rossby waves, which one propagates faster? What are the range of their frequency, wavelength? Their Rossby number?
