課程概述 |
This course is about geochronology, specifically in marine sediments. The course discusses how we determine how old sediments, and thus the samples we use to reconstruct paleoclimate and paleoceanography, are. This is an essential part if we want to reconstruct how climate and oceanography changed in the past. Different ways of determining ages (i.e. proxies) will be discussed covering time periods from very recent, e.g. the last several hundreds of years, to the last Ice Age 20,000 years ago, and up to millions of years back in time. Practical examples of the different methods will be shown and discussed.
The second part of the course will contain several lectures focusing on recent developments in science that are very dependent on their geochronology including, for example, the chronology of the asteroid impact at the KT-boundary. An important part of the course will be the interaction with the students, discussing potential options and pitfalls when using these methods. The knowledge gained during this course will help to understand many other disciplines within the marine and earth sciences and their related fields of science. |
