課程概述 |
The course provides basic knowledge and information of marine changes and pollution. The contents include: Introduction: What is pollution? Nature of inputs, source of inputs etc; Measuring change: impact on individual, population and community response; oceanic CO2 and global warming with climate change Oxygen- demanding wastes: oxygen demand, oxygen budget, enrichment and eutrophication etc.; Oil pollution: inputs, environmental impact of oil pollution etc.; Metals: conservative pollutants, input routes and uptake of metals etc.; Halogenated hydrocarbons: LMW compounds, pesticides, PCBs, inputs to marine environment, and fate and threat to human health; Radioactivity: Nature, units, inputs, and impacts; Dredging, solids, plastics and heat; The state of some seas: ECS, SCS and coastal regions around Taiwan. Topic studies of the seas around Taiwan. The unit will be taught through lectures and group seminars. Extensive use will be made of video material, and group activities. |
課程目標 |
The class will address issues relevant to the nature, distribution and ecological effects of all types and forms of chemical pollutants in natural waters especially coastal and marine waters. The major objectives of this course is: (1) To survey and consider critically the major sources of pollution in the marine environment from both anthropogenic and natural sources; (2) To examine the effects of the various types of pollution on the marine environment; (3) To explore ways in which scientific, economic and management strategies can be used to remediate affected marine environments. On successful completion of this unit, students should be able, at threshold level, to: (1) Identify and describe the types of natural and anthropogenic activities which are responsible for marine pollution; (2) Review and evaluate the effects of pollution on marine organisms and the marine environment generally; (3) Apply physico-chemical principles, in conjunction with financial and organizational considerations, to marine clean-up processes. |
