Introduction to marine biogeochemistry/chemical oceanography
The physical chemistry of seawater
Chemical equilibrium models for the composition of sea water: major and minor elements
Chemical speciation, composition, solubility and thermodynamic relationships and applications to marine biogeochemistry
Redox chemistry of sea water: Biological and geochemical cycling in the oceans
Nutrient cycling, speciation and their budgets in the ocean
Carbon cycling, speciation and their budgets in the ocean
CO2 system, alkalinity, calcite distribution and pH
Trace metals and primary production; the Iron Hypothesis
Marine organics and their role in chemical speciation and in processes affecting the fate of elements in the oceans
Radioisotopes and mixing times in the ocean
Topic studies of the seas around Taiwan

課程目標 |
This class will provide a general knowledge on phenomenon, principle and processes in marine environmental chemistry studies and will point out the composition, origin and solution chemistry of sea water, marine biogeochemical cycles of carbon, nutrients, gases and trace metals; and the effect of human activity on these. It will allow the students to have independent studies of marine chemistry in the oceans, especially in the seas around Taiwan. It should finally appeal to students interested in the field of environmental chemistry and pollution. |
