課程概述 |
Is climate changing? Can human activities explain these changes? Is climate change a significant problem? How would our Earth respond to these changes? In order to answer these questions, we need to understand the Earth processes that drive climate variabilities from the distant past to today. In this class, we will cover physical/chemical/biological processes that are fundamental for climate changes. We will review the climate changes over short and long time scale, understand climate drivers and feedbacks. We will also consider the implications of climate change for the global environment and humans. Intended to be accessible to students not concentrating in science or engineering. Students in climate change studies will get an integrative view on climate changes. |
課程目標 |
Students will learn the fundamentals of climate changes, understand Earth’s climate as an integrative system, be able to differentiate climate forcings and feedbacks. Students will practice how to access big data set, evaluate complicated questions, and articulate scientific views.
|
課程要求 |
Students will conduct three projects. In the first project, the students will exercise a simple radiative energy budget model and interpret the results with the knowledge they learned in class. They will also learn a software Ocean Data View to generate maps of ocean parameters, such as temperature, salinity, nutrients, etc, from an open database World Ocean Atlas. In the second project, the students will read several science research articles to learn the ongoing discussions on how CO2 contributes to the natural climate variations in the Earth’s history. In the third project, the students will select countries/regions to survey on their environment and climate policies and have presentations/exchanges in class. |
