Course Description |
This course provides an introduction to a broad range of concepts, theories, and analytical techniques of microeconomics. It focuses on the analysis of choices made by individual decision-making units (individuals, households, and firms). The use of a market, supply and demand, model will be the fundamental model in which trade-offs and choices will be considered through comparison of costs and benefits of actions. Production and market structure will be analyzed at the firm level. The role of government policy to address microeconomic market failures will be examined. |
Course Objective |
1. Be able to describe the major realms of modern economics, and how to define an economic question
2. Learn the concept of optimization
3. Be able to operate basic economic models to analyze different markets
4. Learn how to derive demand, supply, and form a product market
5. Learn about the perfectly competitive model, in contrast with markets with monopoly power to different degrees
6. Being able to identify the features of various market structures
7. Learn about the theory of “Invisible Hand” proposed by Adam Smith’s “Wealth of Nations” and “Theory of Moral Sentiments.”
8. Being able to comprehend the argument for comparative advantage and apply it to real world examples
9. Acquire an understanding on game theory
10. Being able to understand why a market fails and a government fails
11. Acquire an understanding on externality and the corresponding roles of government

Course Requirement |
Assignments and mini paper will be completed and submitted in a group of 2 to 4 students. Each student is required to find his or her partners by the end of the first week of the course.
For the mini paper, each group is required to read an article from the Economist or other resources and submit a one-page report that presents a summary of the piece and your critique.
