課程概述

This intermediate macroeconomic theory course explores the behavior of the aggregate economy through the analysis of macroeconomic data and models. The course emphasizes an equilibrium perspective, focusing on environments where economic agents optimize and aggregate conditions hold. Key topics include long-run economic growth, short-run economic fluctuations, and their effects on output, employment, inflation, and interest rates. We will also examine the impacts of fiscal and monetary policy on the economy. By the end of the course, students will develop the ability to critically assess economic issues using sound economic reasoning.

課程目標
The primary objective of this course is to help you develop a coherent framework for understanding key macroeconomic phenomena.
We will explore critical questions such as:
- What drives economic growth, and why do economic performances vary across countries and over time? What role does policy play in fostering growth?
- What determines consumption and saving, and how do these factors influence the economy in both the short and long run?
- Why does unemployment occur, and what actions should governments take to address it?
- What causes macroeconomic fluctuations, and how do various shocks and policies impact employment, output, investment, and consumption throughout the business cycle? Should the government intervene to stabilize the economy, or should its role be limited, even when it acts with benevolence?
- What triggers financial crises, and how do financial markets interact with the broader macroeconomy?
While we may not provide simple answers to these complex questions, this course will equip you with the analytical tools and empirical insights necessary to understand them. We will draw on key lessons from macroeconomic research to help you comprehend why certain policy issues remain contentious in both academic discussions and political debates."
課程要求
The course presumes knowledge of both micro and macro at the principles level, as well as elementary differential calculus and high school level algebra. It is helpful, though not necessary, to have taken intermediate micro. Additionally, proficiency with spreadsheet software, such as Microsoft Excel, is expected.
Grading will be based on 4 In-Class Quizzes, Midterm Exam and Final Exam
Please note that unless you experience a serious medical issue (e.g., hospitalization), no exemptions or leniency will be granted regarding the exams.
