課程概述 |
“An Essay on the Principle of Population” written by Thomas Malthus in 1798 had a pessimistic point of view on large populations in the future world. However, world population had doubled in the past 50 years and reached 7.5 billion in 2017. Was Malthus wrong?
To answer the above question, this course will first examine the pattern of demographic transition around the world. Specifically, the demographic statistics of global trends and country features will be investigated. Second, a basic concept of demographic transition will be introduced. We will also discuss the three factors that play important roles in forming a country’s demographic transition: mortality, fertility, and migration. Finally, a demographic transition will be divided into two stages. In the early stage, we will begin with the contribution of demographic dividends to economic growth. The later stage is named as population aging. Problems caused by population aging and possible policies will be discussed.
|
課程目標 |
By the end of the semester, students are capable of (1) obtaining the general picture of global demographic transition; (2) having basic concepts of demographic economics; (3) understanding the linkage of demography and economics; and (4) be aware of the problems caused by population aging and possible solutions. |

*Grading:
Grades for this course will be determined by the following scheme: Midterm 30%, oral presentations (twice) 20%, and a term paper 50%. The details on the grading will be discussed in class.
*Midterm:
The midterm is a closed book exam. The materials discussed in class will be covered. The time and date of the midterm is 9:10-12:10, May 14, 2021 (in class).
*Term Paper:
1. The term paper is a team work. Form a team with other three students (so that 4 students in a team). You have to provide the team list on week 3 (in class). At the end of the semester, each team only has to submit an electronic copy of the team’s term paper (sent by email). The deadline of submitting the term paper is at 11:59 PM (midnight) of June 25, 2021. Late submission will not be graded.
2. For the term paper, each team chooses an interesting population topic, such as a population policy or a population problem in a specific country, to be the research question. Then, students have to collect data and use formal empirical methodologies to analyze the research question. Policy suggestions or policy implications based on the empirical result of the term paper are also welcome.
3. The term paper should be written in a standard format. That is, the following parts should be included: the motivation, literature review, data description, methodology, and results. Plagiarism is prohibited. If plagiarism is caught, the score of the term paper is zero.
4. The main spirit of “team work” is that students within a team have to work together and help each other. Thus, the rules for the term paper apply to the team level. For example, the punishment of late submission and plagiarism apply to all the students within a team.
*Oral presentations:
The purpose of the presentation is to discuss the progress of term paper. Thus, each team will present twice during the semester. The first presentation (week 8) focuses on what the research question is and the summary statistics of data. The second presentation (week 16 and 17) provides the whole term paper, including empirical results. Each presentation is about 10 minutes (per team). |
