課程概述 |
This course is directed at students contemplating research in the “applied micro” fields, especially (but not exclusively) labor economics. It is a course in empirical modelling and applied econometrics, with an emphasis on commonly-used tools for empirical research. The focus will be on the identification of casual relationships using regression-based analysis. Topics covered will include causal inferences, treatment effects, randomized controlled trials, differencing methods, instrumental variables, regression discontinuity, and matching methods. |
課程目標 |
The course will be aiming to equip students with fundamental analytical tools for empirical research. |

Evaluation: There will be one midterm test and a final exam of this class, together with assignments. Evaluation distribution across these tasks is:
Assignments and presentation (30%)
Midterm: November 8, 2016 (in class, 30%)
Final exam: January 10, 2016 (in class, 40%)
Planned Coverage:
We will follow the materials outlined in Angrist & Pischke very closely:
1. Introduction to the “Experimental Ideal” for understanding causality and credible research design (Chapters 1 and 2);
2. Detailed review of Ordinary Least Squares and Regression analysis (Chapter 3);
3. Instrumental Variables (Chapter 4); **NB: This is the most important material**
4. Panel Data and Differences-in-Differences (Chapter 5);
5. Regression Discontinuity Design (Chapter 6);
6. Issues with Standard Errors (Chapter 8).
NOTES:
1. Lectures will be delivered in Chinese. Assignments and tests can be completed in either Chinese or English.
2. The tests are not cumulative. They only cover material since the last test.
3. If you are sick and be absent for the midterm you will need a note from your doctor documenting that you were unable to attend class on the relevant date (please do not submit notes that simply state that your doctor “saw you” on the date of the midterm). The weight for the missed midterm will be transferred to the final exam. Please note that you must get the doctor’s note to me within the week following the date of the midterm. There are no exceptions to this rule: I will not accept notes several weeks after the test or at the end of the semester. If you are late getting the note to me you will receive a mark of 0 for the missed midterm.
4. Individuals who are sick for the final exam will be governed by the rules of missing final examinations of the university.
5. Any requests to re-read a test must be received within the week following the date the test was returned. Please submit your requests in writing, and remember that the entire test will be re-graded.
