This class will be taught in English. It will examine Taiwan’s economic development from about 1860 to the present. The approach will be topical. After two weeks of general introductory material on Taiwan’s population and history, we will begin focusing on Taiwan’s important agricultural products, mainly sugar, tea and rice, and then look at natural resources, namely, gold, coal and camphor. Next we will move on to look at Taiwan’s transportation and financial development. The last part of the class will focus on Taiwan’s industrialization beginning with the pre-war hat industry and then working our way up to the present. Grades will be based on two group video projects (15% + 15%), an individual paper (20%), class participation (10%) and a final exam (40%). |
