課程目標 |
The first three weeks of class, I will give three lectures to introduce the basic facts concerning India and its economy. There are some names and terms you should know and the third week (3/03) I will give a short quiz worth 5% of your grade to encourage you to learn these names and terms. On 3/10, we will watch a light comedy, Outsourced, which deals with India’s international trade in services. On 3/17, we will discuss the recent Satyam scandal (based on materials I will put on line) and talk about other recent news. From 3/24 on, a student, or students (depending on class size) will present a couple news stories from India to the class and this will be worth 20% of the grade. On 3/24, we will look at some IMF papers on growth accounting to gain a broad overview of what has been happening in India and the following week (3/31) we will use material from the India Together website to look at some of the problems facing India. This will involve group presentations worth 15% of your grade. I hope by this time, you will have gained a basic overview of India. The rest of the course (and the remaining 60% of your grade) will be DIO: Do It Ourselves. 4/07 we will discuss how you want to organize the rest of the class and how you want to be graded.
WARNING: This is my second year teaching this course and I have never been to India. I have organized this course because I want to learn about India myself and I think Taiwan should have people who have some understanding of this important economy. Therefore after the first few weeks of the course, you should expect me to be more of a coordinator than a lecturer overflowing with expertise. |
