課程概述 |
This course will introduce the role of demographic transition in economic growth. Specifically, two parts will be included. First, we will begin with the contribution of demographic dividends to economic growth. The second part of this course will focus on the economic problems caused by population aging and possible policies.
To study the aforementioned topics, the demographic statistics of global trends and country features will be investigated first. Then, theoretical and empirical studies in the literature will be explored. Dynamic programming and recursive competitive equilibrium are the tools that we will review in class. Simple computational methods for analyzing these models also will be introduced. The goal is to master the basic theory and methods so that, by the end of this course, students are capable of reading the literature and analyzing related issues.

By the end of the semester, students are capable of (1) obtaining a big picture of global demographic transition; (2) reading demographic literature; and (3) quantitatively analyzing demographic issues.

課程要求 |
Grading:
Grades for this course will be determined by the following scheme: Oral presentations 50% and a quantitative term paper 50%. The details on the grading will be discussed in the first week of this course.
Term Paper:
Each student who enrolls in this course should submit a term paper at the end of the semester. The term paper CANNOT be collaborated. At the beginning of the semester, each student chooses a country as his/her target. The purpose of the term paper is to study interesting population policies or population problems in the target country. The deadline of submitting the term paper is at 11:59 PM (midnight) of June 21, 2021 (sent by email).
**Students who are in Econ department:
The term paper should be consisting of demographic statistics in the target country, a theoretical model, and a simple quantitative analysis. Students will get extra points if they also include an empirical analysis with regressions in their term papers.
**Students who are from other departments:
The term paper style for Econ students is preferred but not required. The requirements on the term paper are demographic statistics in the target country, an empirical regression model, and empirical analyses. Students will get extra points if a theoretical model is also included to support the empirical results in the term paper.
Presentation:
The purpose of the presentation is to discuss the progress of students’ term papers. There are FIVE presentations: 10-15 minutes per student for the first three and 30 minutes per student for the last two. In the first presentation, students have to show the target country’s demography. The second presentation focuses on interesting population policies or problems in the target country. Then the interesting questions should be modeled in the third presentation. Calibration results should be presented in the fourth presentation. The last presentation is for students to present their term papers, including the targeted country’s demography, the focus of the term paper, the model, and the quantitative results.
