課程概述

This course is designed to equip doctoral students with the knowledge and skills in designing and implementing quantitative nursing studies. The primary focus of the course includes critical analysis of research design, measurement issues, and related data collection. An integration of seminar, lecture, and student presentations are employed. The course is scheduled to meet once a week for three hours.  

課程目標
At completion of the course, the students are prepared to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of various designs and methods in quantitative
research
2. Identify methodological issues pertinent to quantitative research
3. Demonstrate the skill in data collection, analysis, and reporting
techniques in quantitative research
4. Apply principles of instrument development to current measurement problems
5. Evaluate the quality and relevance of quantitative research

 
課程要求
Assignment #1: Critique of a research design paper. Five types of design will be discussed

Student will present their critique orally on November 23 and November 30, 2009. Each presentation is limited to 20 minutes in length. The written paper is due on the following week. The paper should be prepared in APA format, 5-6 pages in length for each design and less is more.

Assignment #2: Selected a methodological challenge or problem and develop a research plan for addressing the problem. The need for the proposed work and its specific aims should be clearly articulated. A concise review of literature will focus on critique of existing methodologies and overall utility and limitation. The proposed work will reflect comprehensive understanding of research design, data collection, measurement, and appropriate application to the identified methodological problem.

Student will present the proposed research plan to class at the end of semester on December, 28, 2008 and January 04, 2009. For each student, 30 minutes is allocated for oral presentation. The written paper should be prepared in APA format and due on Jan.11, 2010.
