課程概述 |
The traditional view that brain is an immune-privileged area has shifted drastically with the growing understanding that the CNS and immune systems interact on many levels in both health and disease. The goal of this course is to provide specific knowledge of immunology in the brain and in immune-mediated CNS diseases. |
課程目標 |
The course will first explain the basics of CNS immunology in the context of cellular functions and histological structures. Concepts including endogenous and exogenous immune resources of CNS, the function of meningeal lymphatics, and the origin of specific CNS immune cells will be introduced. This will be followed by a detailed study of the CNS and peripheral immune system interactions in the diseased brain. Acute brain injury (e.g. stroke or traumatic brain injury) and chronic autoimmune disease (e.g. multiple sclerosis) will be used as representative examples to explain how immune cells contribute to the pathology in the CNS. Group discussion of current research articles in neuroimmunology will be conducted in this course. Additional learning opportunities will be provided to the students by invited lectures from experts in the field. |
課程要求 |
At the end of the course, students will be asked to complete a short in-depth essay which aims to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the current knowledge in the field. Students will be graded based on attendance, participation, and the essay. |
