課程概述 |
Aspects covered in the lectures will include:
1. Case studies of real-life river and valley evolution problems, including observation and mapping of erosional and depositional features
2. Shallow water theory, its extension to sediment transport, debris flows and flowslides, and simple approximations of the theory
3. Simple numerical modeling tools applicable to rivers and landscape morphodynamics
4. Basic photogrammetry techniques applicable to real and laboratory-scale landscapes
|
課程目標 |
This is an exploration course focusing on the hydraulics of rivers and their morphodynamic influence on the landscape, with particular reference to the mountainous terrain that is characteristic of Taiwan. The aim of the course is to introduce students to the observation, analysis and modeling of stream-valley systems. In doing so, the course will seek to integrate qualitative and quantitative points of view, as well as experimental and numerical modeling methods. The course will involve two components of equal importance:
1) class lectures aimed at introducing concepts and methods, complemented by targeted exercises (both in-class tasks and homework assignments);
2) project-based learning in which students develop a study of their own design, possibly related to their MSc or PhD thesis.
|
課程要求 |
In groups of two, students will be challenged to study a morphodynamic system of their own choosing. The system will be modeled on a small-scale (tabletop) in the laboratory, observed qualitatively (mapping, explanations etc.) and analysed quantitatively using either one of two techniques:
1) computer simulation using idealised physical assumptions and simple numerical algorithms;
2) detailed experimental measurements of landscape features, based on digital terrain model acquisition using photogrammetric techniques.
Students will be free to choose one of the two approaches, or use both if they wish. Results are finally to be interpreted in light of physical principles and actual field observations, as presented during the lectures or documented in the literature. Progress and results will be reported in interim reports and a final jury presentation.
