This course is designed for students to practice an integration of the knowledge, design, and operation about flying machines, by exercising realistic effort upon developing and manufacturing for a test vehicle of flight. We will start with the basic principles of aerodynamics. It is followed by an introduction to the background and fundamentals for various propulsion systems used in aeronautic and astronautic science and technology. The students are encouraged to investigate relevant principles and even devise new concepts or machines for flight, which will be presented and discussed in the class. In the second half of the semester, the students are required to make a flying machine that will be demonstrated in a contest. If time is sufficient, some analytical tools such as commercial software for numerical simulation, specifically of computational fluid dynamics, would be introduced. The project is purported to help the students understand and expand the knowledge and skills they have learned by practicing them into a real machine with a well design procedure. |
